ADD/ADHD

Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, commonly known as ADD/ADHD, is a cognitive disability in which ones responses are effected. This includes everything from movement to speech to attentiveness. Difficulty staying focused, paying attention, and controlling behavior are all symptoms of ADD and ADHD.

ADD/ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders, with the average age of onset being 7 years old. The disability may also continue on through adolescence and adulthood. ADHD has 3 sup types:

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
Predominantly inattentive
Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive

In the most common sub type, Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive, six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity are present.

There are various methods of treatment to combat ADD/ADHD. Different medications, various types of psychotherapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments are often recommended depending on the severity of the case.

If you or someone you care for suffers from ADD/ADHD, you may be entitled to a significant amount of money. The Disability Tax Credit is available to people who have ADD/ADHD. Once qualified for the DTC, if the person is under the age of 18, they may be entitled to additional benefits through the Child Disability Benefit. Another program that will become available once you are DTC certified, is the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP). This remarkable program offers grants and bonds which total up to $90,000.
