Colitis

Colitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the colon that affects mainly the large intestine and the rectum. There are a variety of causes of the disease including infections, poor blood supply (ischemia), and autoimmune reactions.

Those suffering from colitis may often experience abdominal pain, loss of appetite, fatigue, bloody diarrhea, mucus in the stool, cramping, and bloating.

A thorough physical examination, medical history, and diagnostic tests are needed to make an accurate diagnosis of colitis. Stool samples are usually examined for evidence of blood or infection. Often the colon is examined through a procedure called colonoscopy. An endoscope, or lighted flexible tube and camera attached to a television monitor, is inserted through the anus. This allows the doctor to see the inside lining of the colon and rectum. During the colonoscopy, the doctor may remove a tissue sample (called a biopsy) from the intestinal lining for further examination under the microscope.

Treatment options may vary from diet to medications to surgery in severe cases. It can be straining physically, emotionally, and financially. Fortunately, the Canadian Government has put programs into place to help those suffering from Colitis such as the Disability Tax Credit. This allows Canadians to get significant tax breaks, and is most beneficial when retroactively is claimed up to the past 10 years. Once you are DTC certified, the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) also becomes available, along with up to $90,000 in grants and bonds.
