Dementia

Dementia is a disease of the brain, usually of a chronic and/or progressive nature, where there is a disturbance in multiple higher cortical functions. This disturbance in the brain effects memory, thinking, comprehension, learning capacity, and language and judgement. In addition, there can be impartment of cognitive functioning and the occasional person will display a deterioration of emotional control.

Some symptoms those with dementia display include: memory loss which is usually noticed first by a family member or a loved one, difficulty finding words or communicating, confusion and disorientation, and difficulty in handling complex tasks. Some people will also display issues with reasoning, problem solving and difficulty in motor functions.

Genetic make-up and previous other health conditions can contribute to a higher risk of the disease.
