Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases which lead to progressive degeneration of the optic nerve. This in turn can lead to loss of nerve tissue that results in gradual irreversible vision loss and potential blindness if not detected and treated early.

Glaucoma occurs when an increased pressure on the eyeball causes gradual loss of sight. Glaucoma can cause an individual to lose their sight slightly or can cause them to go legally blind depending on the severity of the condition. Some individuals will experience hazy or blurred vision, severe head and eye pain or sensitivity to bright lights.

Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain. You need to see your eye doctor regularly so she can diagnose and treat glaucoma before long-term visual loss happens.
