Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. It usually starts with pain in the abdomen or tenderness when touching the abdomen that can last for several days. Depending on the individual the pain can be mild or severe. The pain will usually start when you eat and gradually worsen over time. Sometimes the pain can lead to a rapid pulse, nausea and vomiting.
There are two types of pancreatitis including acute and chronic.
Acute: Is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas. It can have severe complications and high mortality despite treatment.
Chronic: Inflammation of the pancreas that does not heal or improve and gets worse of time. This can lead to permanent damage.
For more severe cases of pancreatitis treatment is found in a hospital through intravenous fluids to help the pancreas heal by increasing lost fluids and maintaining the body’s blood pressure. In most cases, individuals will control pain with medication until the inflammation lessens or goes away.
